Otoe-Missouria Tribe

Beliefs

The Otoe-Missouria struggled with maintaining their traditional way of life and adapting to the new non-Indian culture. Historical circumstances forced change on the Otoe-Missouria. "By incorporating many of the these changes into their lives and interweaving them with old ways, the Otoes have maintained continuity in social relationships and a worldview that continues to distinguish them from other people. The result is a strong and continued sense of Otoe identity, albeit an identity blended with attributes of the dominant society. Basic to maintaining an Otoe consciousness is their ability to adapt."
