Henry S. Johnston, 1867-1965

Henry S. Johnston, an early-day Perry attorney, was very active in Oklahoma politics. He was a member and temporary presiding officer of the Constitutional Convention in 1906 and was elected governor of the State of Oklahoma in 1926.

Midway through his four-year term he was impeached from office by the State Senate on a general accusation of “incompetency.” When Mr. Johnston and his family returned to Perry a cheering crowd of some 4,000 townspeople surprised them with a spontaneous greeting in the courthouse park to show their support.

In 1932 he was elected to the State Senate. He maintained a law practice in Perry until his death January 7, 1965. On the day before his death the Oklahoma legislature approved a measure to soften the stigma of his removal from office.

Today, Henry S. Johnston’s portrait hangs in the Oklahoma State Senate Chamber in honor of his service to the State of Oklahoma.

The Museum is proud to display a recreation of Mr. Johnston’s office in Perry. It features original memorabilia from his second-floor office on the south side of the town square.
